1) Read the New York Times newspaper's overview of the Occupy Wall Street protests found here.
2) Using that information, complete the background questions handed out to you in class.
3) After this is finished, post a comment on this blog by writing a 5-7 sentence paragraph answering the following question: would you think about joining one of these protests?
Check out these two websites to help you decide:
http://wearethe99percent.tumblr.com/ (says that the protests are a good thing)
http://the53.tumblr.com/ (says that the protests are not a good thing)
I would not join the protests because the protestors are all just hypocrits. The protestors are angry and will not listen to the beliefs of others or negotiate to help solve the problem. Occupy Wall Street protestors are just angry indebted rebels in America who do not have a cause or a reason to stand against the government.
ReplyDeleteI would not join this protest. I am not extremely angered by the corporate businesses. Therefore it would be a waste of time for me. Also as of right now, it hasn't directly applied to my life. This gives me reason not to care about it.
ReplyDeleteI would not join the movement because there is no reason to protest against things that are your own fault. most of the protestors are only doing it because theyre angry about there personal problems. it doesnt really have anything to do with the government.
ReplyDeleteIf I was to join either of these I would be one of the protesters. It is not fair that the top 1% of people hold most of the money. It is also not right that the government is run by industry. Even if people are smart and good workers it is still hard to get a job and make money.
ReplyDeleteI would not join either side of this protest. for one its a waste of time. id rather be at my house doing something than be out on the street yelling a bunch of stuff that no one listens to. also there are very simple answeres to these questions that people are totally avoiding just because they want whatever they want, and if they dont get it or it dowesnt work out the way they want it to they get mad. that is why i would not join either side of the protest.
ReplyDeleteI would not join join this protest because those people actually work for their money. they didn't go around and ask for money. They work for it so they deserve it. Protestors just whine about it because they are lazy and just hope to get an easy money.
ReplyDeleteI would not join one of the protests. I feel that our country is enough of its own trouble and the government needs to deal more with other issues. Also, the people that are complaining about all the debt they have need to take some of this into their own hands. They need to get a job and maybe take some of their wasteful financial obligations out of their life. The protests are only creating trouble.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would want to get involved in this. I would be on the side of protestors if i did, but it's risky business. People have gotten hurt and arrested. This protest is a serious affair. It isn't quite fair how these people get treated by their own governement.
ReplyDeleteI would DEFINITLY join the 53% movement. It is ridiculous that people are demanding to distribute wealth-- asking for government to become more powerful and control aspects like wealth affects productivity and motivation of US citezens. it is our freedom to get out there and work!!! theres ALWAYS something to do. persuit of happiness-- is our right to improve our quality of life. and how do you do that??! by working. NOT COMPLAINING! the protesters in new york, who have been protesting for 2 months could have made around $500 working at mcdonalds in the time they were complaining. and getting a job at mcdonalds is NOT HARD. stop whining, and do something productive.
ReplyDeleteI will not join the protests because all of these people are so angry. I know that they really need to be paid more, and need the basic insurance of their life. However, they can try some other ways to solve their problem after protests, but not only complain. I think their problems are not only caused by these big companies, but also caused by the whole society. The way this society works has made the society more and more far away from the American Dream.
ReplyDeleteI would not join either side. I wouldn't want to get involved with that situation. I understand that corporate greed is frustrating for some people but they should stop complaining and actually do something about it. Many of these people need to get their priorities straight. They should stop blaming others for their problems and situations. If they got themselves into that mess then they can get out of it.
ReplyDeleteI would join the protests depends on the situation. Because of there are some of people whose demands the benefit without any efforts. Protests for those people are useless. So it's hard to define the answer of this question. If there is no protesting, there will be no world like these days.
ReplyDeleteI would not protest with the protestors. Most of them don’t seem to have legit reasons for protesting. It is seems like a foolish thing to protest about. We have more important issues to worry about like our economy, wars, and other issues that actually affect hardworking citizens instead of those who most likely don’t pay their taxes and are lazy. This issue can be solved, if these people step up and take responsibility for themselves. They need to learn to work; wealth isn’t just handed to you for good reasons. Why are we questioning this? I think this protesting is a waste of time. Izzy made a good point. If these people spent as much time working as they are protesting, they wouldn’t have to be complaining because they would be getting paid. These protestors are foolish and just protesting out of pointless rage, but they do have the right to voice their opinions just like this is just my opinion. I am so grateful we have the freedom of speech and the freedom to express ourselves. I didn’t see anyone who would join the protests, but I would like to hear their side.
ReplyDeleteI would not join the protestors becuase they complain about the rich people make them poor. People are rich because they work hard and earn money for their own future. The protestors should rather spend more time on working and earning money than go out and waste time on protesting.
ReplyDeleteI would not join the protests. The people who joined this protests not only have gotten hurt but aslo wasted their own time. I think it's foolish behavior. because the protests that thay did cannot change anything. at present, america is already become a country that has problem with Political acrivities of breaking up, polarization and the widening gap between the rich and the poor. this problems cannot be changed by the protests.
ReplyDeleteI would not participate in either two sides of the protests. First, it wastes of time and many people got hurt. Second, the protestors somehow just are unemployed and they want a jobs. Moreover, they just care about themselves but didn't think wider. However, the 99% and 53% both have their rights and wrongs so i would decide not to join.
ReplyDeletei would not join the protests. Firstly, they complain about rich people who works really hard each day to have enough money for their future and their family. I think instead of that why don't they work harder, spend more time on working to get higher salary. Secondly, i think this waste too much time, and maybe it hurts people. I would rather staying home and doing somethings that i like to do instead of walking around, complaining about people who is richer than me
ReplyDeleteI would not participate in either of both sides. I really don't care it because everybody has their own way. It wasted a lot of time and may be you will got hurt. Both 99% and 53% have their own reason to do that. However, they didn't think wider what will happen in the future. God creates the way for us, so do not change it.

ReplyDeletei would not join either both sides i dont want any trouble because i join either both sides. this should be all done by government law not us. it is just waste of time complaning to government. i will be not good to be protests complaining about the rich persons so i would not join both sides
ReplyDeleteI would not join this protest because I dont really care. Also, I don't want to get in any social or political trouble.... and this problem is out of my interest.
ReplyDeleteI believe that i would join the protest because i am a strong leader and i believe that the government should tax higher on the richer. The poor are the peopple more in debt and they cant get out because its harder to balance money when you owe so much to the government. The rich already have the money that they need and they are the ones buying the extra objects that they really dont need in a time like this. Big companies are makin more money while the small businesses are suffering. It may not be considered it yet, but our country is becoming more and more like a comunistic government where the man tells us what we can and cannot sell. WE need to be abler to make our own choices and this protest is a good showing of how we need to take control and how we can do it if we get enough support and have a clear peaceful message
ReplyDeleteI would not join the protest because I will waste my time out on the street and arguing for something I don't have any benefit for. Why don't those people use their time to work to get the money and pay for their debt instead of wasting time out there protesting??
