Evaluating Columbus's Impact

File:Christopher Columbus3.jpg
Columbus Day will be commemorated in America on October 10, less than one month away. Whenever this day comes around, people debate whether Columbus and his men were a good thing for the New World they encountered in 1492. Some hail him as a fearless hero and explorer who discovered new lands and brought civilization to two continents of people. Others say he that he was a slavetrader and a thief, a man who cared little for others and would do anything for gold and glory. In class today, you will look over two different links covering both sides of this issue: was early Spanish involvement in the New World a good thing for the people who lived there?

Read through the following directions carefully.
1. You and your partner will read through these two links:
http://www.osia.org/documents/Columbus05_factvsfiction.pdf (Just pages 9-11)
Extermination Account (Start reading under the heading "Extermination")
2. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being "strongly disagree" and 10 being "strongly agree," evaluate the following statement: Early Spanish involvement in the New World was a good thing. Write or type out five sentences that justify your response. Once you show Mr. Shoop your five sentences, go on to step 3.
3. After you have written your response, access Voki through the following link: Voki.com. Copy and paste your response into the avatar of your choice and post the link to your finished avatar in your comment. Your comment will contain your five sentences and a link to your avatar. Remember the guidelines for this blog -- keep it appropriate and education-oriented.
4. You will have a quiz on Monday. It will cover 1) Christopher Columbus’s journal and the vocabulary words (disposition, prostrate, ingenious, disposed) we learned 2) your opinion on whether Columbus's exploration should be celebrated today, and 3) the Colombian exchange (textbook pages 25-26) -- know what the Colombian Exchange was and three products from each “side” of the exchange.

  1. By Emily Schacht and Emily Leyrer. We think it is about a 3. It was mostly bad because Columbus completly took over their land. He also made them slaves...slave trade and stealing the indians. Along with the slave trade Columbus killed many of the indians. Columbus went for good intent but in the end it turned out bad.

  2. By David S. well no duh it's by David S, the thing says David S said... whatever. I think it's about a 4. It was pretty bad. Colombus brought disease with him and his men. He gave disease to the indians. He also brought natives back with him and sold them as slaves. There was a lot of war, injuries, and death becuase of Colombus. Sure the native tribes united, but they united against Colombus!

We think that involvement in the New World was necessary for progress. How else would these Indians have learned concepts like Christianity and science? Chris could’ve done it a better way—minus the slavery—but his intentions were pure and it increased world productivity and trade. European expansion could have gone A LOT worse, and they could have taken advantage over the Indians’ resources and left.

  4. We say seven. Early on Culombus and the Taino idians got along. Eventually though, they started to fight. Although, there were problems between the new people and the natives it was still good. That is what shaped our nation to how it is today. Columbus discovering the United States ended up being great!

We think we’ll pick number 3. It’s not a good thing because of Columbus’ voyage, many Native People were killed and being treated as slaves. Columbus also took gold from the New Land which is their property. However, early Spanish involvement has opened a new page for the world. So that’s why we are agree with the rank of 3.

I think it's about 4. Columbus isn't so bad, he is pretty bad, but he also did somethings good. He killed so many indian, he maded them slaves and he traded them. He took like all the land of the Indian, wasn't it so bad. But anyway Columbus discovering is good, at least he dicovered a new land for people, for humanity. That land is which we called "The United States of America".

  8. I will give 2. It is true, and was a great thing that spanish found the New World. Spanish might have thought that they tried their best to help developing the New World; however, it was not a right thing to be involved in every single thing. Spnaish obviously took away freedoms and rights of the Native Americans by treating them worse than animals. Also, because of the desire to take advantage of the New World, Spanish enslaved and often slaughtered the Native Americans.

  10. We think it is 6. Columbus found out the new land, which eventually became the United States of America. Although he did do some bad things to the Natives, but this is a necessary step of development to become the world that we have now. We know these things that Columbus had done are bad, so we forbid them to avoid them from happening again. Lastly we cannot deny Columbus had contributed.

  11. Spanish coming to the new world was not a good thing. Sure it helped advance the west, but millions of Native Americans lost their lives in the process. It would be the same as if aliens came to earth and told us all that we now had to work for them for next to nothing, and if we refused they would kill us. The Spanish coming to the new world helped in the long run, but the native’s way of life was ruined, and that is not a good thing.
    I rate it 2 out of 10

  13. I think it is not bad for Spanish to come find a new land but i think it is wrong to kill many Native Indians where they live.they could found better way for them to weather kill indians but be friends with them
